PLEASE HELP SAVE THE PAVILION!

This is a picture of the Pottawatomie County Fair Pavilion shortly after being built in 1921.

Wasn't it beautiful?  The octagon-shaped Pavilion was originally used for all judged entries at the Annual County Fair.  The octagon displayed food, clothing, quilts, handiwork, and agricultural products.  The ground floor of the long North Wing housed large livestock, with poultry and rabbits on the upper level.

Unfortunately this fine building is in immediate danger of collapse.  In 2001 the nonprofit "Friends of the Fair Pavilion" was formed to preserve this landmark.  Our accomplishments to date include:

  • Building has been placed on the STATE and NATIONAL REGISTERS OF HISTORIC PLACES
  • Placed on the Kansas Preservation Alliance 2004 List of Most Endangered Historic Places
  • Received a $90,000 Heritage Trust Grant in June 2004 from the Kansas State Historical Society
  • Acquired IRS 501(c)3 non-profit status so all donations are tax deductible
  • A Consulting Engineer and a Restoration Contractor have been retained.

Restoration of the Pavilion is ready to begin but is going to cost considerably more than the amount received from the first Heritage Grant.  We are now in the process of applying for another Heritage Trust Grant and we need YOUR HELP in raising the matching funds of $18,000.
